SoftBank Eyes Willcom or the Epic Battle for Mobile BroadBand in Japan

My take on the mobile broadband war in Japan

SoftBank Eyes Willcom or the Epic Battle for Mobile BroadBand in Japan

The battle is all about Willcom’s 2.5GHz license. A big fat 30Mhz chunk of the 2.5Ghz spectrum.

You’ve got a mobile carrier which invests in saving a competitor via a separate company, a competitor that happens to own some mobile broadband spectrum, the carrier then decides to deploy a cell network it never cared for but one that was used by that specific competitor, then announces it wants to buy the failing competitor 100%.

Isn’t that called a plan?

Syncrisis

Miyazaki. A case of Ancients v. Moderns.

Amplifyd from paulpapadimitriou.com

Slowly first. Faster then. Jerking off.

That’s basically Miyazaki‘s definition of the iPad culture.

While Miyazaki makes a valid point about cases of herd psychology shown by people wanting the latest gadgetery4, his prism is blocked by his ceteribus paribus assumptions.

The real world is his own5Creativity is his own.

These are his rules. His Greeks. His Romans.

Learn from the Ancients, respect them, give dues if you wish, but don’t let them tell you what your path should be. How your creativity should be shaped.

Take A Stand Or Shut Up

Fired over Twitter? Take responsibility.

Amplifyd from paulpapadimitriou.com

Stop blaming technology at least. It’s not because of Twitter that Octavia Nasr was fired.
The postulate of Twitter is simple. Broadcast 140 character messages. In public by default. You don’t have to be on Twitter, you don’t have to use it and you sure don’t have to write everything and anything.

Stop blaming technology, take responsibility and take a stand.

That Which Gives Light

It takes courage to hire bright minds & to be a better company.

Amplifyd from paulpapadimitriou.com

As a potential customer, I don’t give a damn about your policies. I won’t read them, thank you. I want the best company with the brightest people. The company that will offer me the best value. This is the company I want you to be. Or I’ll pass.

So, ask yourself: do you want to have the brightest stars working for you?

Their personal blogs are their new resumes.

Google Me

My thoughts on the possible Google Me, the social network initiative from the Mountain View giant.

Amplifyd from paulpapadimitriou.com

Let’s be clear. Google has all the pieces in order to create a social network –besides the ugly UI, that is.

Gmail, Chat, Blogger, Picasa, Buzz, Apps, Docs, Friend Connect, Latitude, Calendar, Chat, Profiles (upon which Chris Saad seems to think that Me thing will be built1). You name it -just don’t name Orkut. In a way, it’s already a social network of sorts.

The Future of Global Innovation Is In Europe’s Own Hands

My take on entrepreneurship in Europe and some of Silicon Valley's shortcomings.

Amplifyd from paulpapadimitriou.com

Think lean. Forget about being Europe. Forget those political ideals for a minute. Countries will always tend to defend their national champions and no EU will change that in any foreseeable future. Think opportunities. Allow for fiscal competition between countries -it sure worked well for Switzerland- but get rid of the phonebooks of national financial regulations. Forget about political environments & don’t punish VCs for the credit crunch, damn it. Think big. Entrepreneurs are the key to social prosperity. They need capital. You can help jump start the industry. Silicon Valley did that. Israel too. Hell, even France did a nice job. Think small. Local initiatives will save you. Let young entrepreneurs collaborate and reshape whatever the hell they want. Don’t let public initiatives be the alpha and the omega. Nor public funding. Think smart. Reform those damn employment regulations. Everywhere. Stop protecting us from our own mistakes. Let us be resilient. And make it easy to grab talent. Anywhere it comes from. Think time. I repeat. Time. It takes time. More than the electoral cycle.
